Posing or Playing?

Yoga is a Journey or Exploration, Imperfection and Connection

Yoga is often celebrated for its physical, mental, and spiritual benefits, but one aspect that is sometimes overlooked is its playful nature. Leela is a Sanskrit word that translates into ‘play’, and that is exactly what adaptive yoga entails. What makes yoga playful, and why is this playfulness so important?

1. Exploration and creativity

Yoga invites us to explore our bodies, minds, and spirits in new and creative ways. It’s not just about achieving the perfect pose; it’s about discovering what feels good, what challenges us, and what brings us joy. Yoga is for everyone, and this inclusivity opens the door to creativity. By adapting poses to meet individual needs, yoga becomes a form of creative expression, allowing practitioners to play with movement and find what works best for their unique bodies.

2. Embracing imperfection

Yoga doesn’t demand perfection; it encourages the opposite—embracing our imperfections. Adaptive yoga highlights this by reminding us that there is no one-size-fits-all in yoga. The playful nature of yoga lies in the freedom to try, and learn without judgment. Celebrating progress, we create a safe space to explore without fear of failure. The most perfect pose is a smile.

3. Connection and community

Yoga fosters a sense of connection, both with oneself and with others. This connection is deepened through shared experiences, laughter, conversation, and support. YMMS emphasizes the importance of community. Students come together to practice, adapt, and enjoy yoga in a supportive environment. The playfulness in yoga comes alive in these group settings, where the collective energy and shared experiences create a joyful atmosphere.

4. Mindfulness with levity

While yoga is deeply rooted in mindfulness, it doesn’t have to be “too” serious. Approaching yoga with a light heart can enhance the practice, encouraging us to be present without taking ourselves too seriously. Adaptive yoga is designed to be accessible and enjoyable, helping students stay in the moment while cultivating a sense of fun and curiosity, making yoga a joyful exploration rather than a rigid discipline.

5. Empowerment through adaptation

Yoga can be adapted to fit Any Body, making the practice empowering rather than restrictive. By encouraging students to modify poses, use props, and listen to their bodies, adaptive yoga transforms the practice into a playful, personalized experience of exploration and growth.

Yoga is a practice of balance—between effort and ease, discipline and freedom, focus and play. Next time you step onto your mat or sit down in your chair, remember that yoga is not just about poses or perfection, it’s about finding joy in the journey.
