Benefits of Yoga for Sleep:

  1. Reduces Stress and Anxiety: Yoga helps lower cortisol levels and promotes a sense of calm, making it easier to fall asleep.
  2. Enhances Relaxation: Breathing exercises and mindfulness in yoga activate the parasympathetic nervous system, preparing the body for rest.
  3. Improves Sleep Quality: Regular yoga practice can help deepen sleep cycles, resulting in more restorative sleep.
  4. Relieves Physical Tension: Stretching and gentle movements in yoga releases tension in muscles and joints, reducing discomfort that might interfere with sleep.

Yoga Poses to Improve Sleep:

  • Legs Up the Wall Pose (Viparita Karani):
  • Lie on your back with your hips close to a wall. Extend your legs up the wall. Relax your arms by your sides and breathe deeply.
  • Child’s Pose (Balasana):
  • Kneel on the floor, sit back on your heels, and then fold forward, extending your arms in front of you or resting them by your sides. Rest your forehead on the mat and breathe deeply.
  • Corpse Pose (Savasana):
  • Lie flat on your back with your arms by your sides, palms facing up. Let your feet fall naturally apart. Close your eyes, relax your entire body, and focus on your breath.
  • Reclining Bound Angle Pose (Supta Baddha Konasana):
  • Lie on your back and bring the soles of your feet together, allowing your knees to fall open. Place your hands on your belly or by your sides. Use pillows or blocks under your knees for support if needed.
  • Supine Spinal Twist (Supta Matsyendrasana):
  • Lie on your back and draw your knees to your chest. Extend your arms out to the sides in a T position. Drop your knees to one side while turning your head to the opposite side. Hold and breathe, then switch sides.

Remember consistency is the key! Incorporating yoga into your daily routine, even for a few minutes before bedtime, can lead to better long-term sleep.
